We are excited to advertise a postdoctoral position that will be the key research scientist in an exciting multidisciplinary project, which is a collaboration between the University of Surrey (Dr Paola Campagnolo) and The Pirbright Institute (Dr Kevin Maringer).

In this project, we aim at identifying the role of liver perivascular cells (stellate cells) in the vascular complications of dengue. Severe dengue is often characterised by haemorrhagic manifestations, leading to plasma and blood extravasation, and the liver is majorly affected by this disease. We have discovered that the circulating dengue protein NS1 inhibits the ability of perivascular cells (pericytes) to support the vascular barrier function (Cheung et al., 2020, MSphere). In this project, we will further investigate this mechanism in liver vasculature, utilising cutting-edge co-culture system and functional assays, combined with 3D multicellular organoids.

Dengue virus infection has been reported as one of the top-ten health threat by the WHO in 2020. With half of the world population at risk of infection mainly in low-mid income countries and over 500,000 individuals developing severe symptom, this project has the potential to deliver real life-changing impact by helping to reduce the risk of deathly complications. #
